After a few decades in BBC Radio, where I directed plays, documentaries (including a week with the Foreign Legion), music and poetry programmes, I was flung into the brutal world of the freelance. Fortunately I had already written and directed two musicals, one for Radio 4, the other for Radio 3 and had other skills that enabled me to earn a shaky living. For reasons that escape me now I was drawn to the theatre and approached a composer/actor, John Telfer, with the information that he and I were going to write a musical. The first one is safely in a desk drawer, but the second, 'Muscles the Musical' had a successful tryout at The Landor theatre in London. We ended up with good reviews, full houses and standing ovations. All of which, in the way of these things, has come so far to nothing. Just as well really as the half-dozen re-writes, reduced cast size and additional songs have made it a far better show. So we will continue knocking on doors until someone with money says yes. In the meantime, the next show is dancing in my mind.....

Ex head of Northumbria University foreign languages department. Previously I worked in France and worked as a Russian translator in the Foreign Office. I have written / composed 6 musical works: 4 musical dramas; a musicaI drama “Paul” converted into a rock oratorio, which was performed in a theatre and large churches in the N. of England – recently provisionally accepted for performances at Westminster Cathedral. I also have a smaller choral work. The titles of these works are “Arthur and Guenevere,” “Peace in Our Time,” “Jane Eyre,” “Patrick,” and “Pilgrim”.I have written 2 novels and 3 non – fiction works. Nine songs from my musicals were finalists and semi – finalists in 3 song competitions (U.S . Unisong International Song Contest and 2 U.K. Songwriting Contests). My musicals are in the pop – classics idiom. The style is funky, pop – ish, yet opera-oratorio natured. Apart from “Paul”, my other works (except “Pilgrim”) have all been provisionally accepted for production by music theatre companies and schools, yet each one has been accidentally sidelined – due to changes in government grant policy (“Jane Eyre” and my French version of “Arthur and Guenevere” at Dijon Summer Festival); due to death of MD (“Patrick”), due to high school staff changes (“Peace in Our Time”and “Patrick” again)and to the closure of a U.S.theatre company – conversion of “Paul” to musical drama. My musicals are usually scored for 6-7 instruments, or 3-4 eg “Peace in Our Time”.Cast sizes are restricted, scene changes limited. In some there are small informal choruses whose members play secondary roles. The works are mainly vocally-based, sung-through, although there are occasionally short spoken dialogues.

The dynamic musical theatre songwriting partnership that is George Stiles (music) and Anthony Drewe (lyrics) have been writing together since they met at Exeter University over twenty years ago. George and Anthony have written five musicals together: In 2004 they composed the new songs, additional music and lyrics, vocal and dance arrangements for the multi-award winning MARY POPPINS, currently one of the UK's and Broadway’s biggest attractions. Their first musical was TUTANKHAMUN (Northcott Theatre and Imagination Building); which they hope to revisit one day. JUST SO was produced by Cameron Mackintosh and won the 1985 Vivian Ellis Prize…none other than Steven Spielberg then secured an option to turn it into a feature animation. Just So most recently played at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2004. HONK!– which was commissioned by the Watermill Theatre in 1993 – has been produced over 4,000 times and won the Olivier Award for Best Musical in 2000, the FNB VITA Award in South Africa, and the Elliot Norton Award in the USA. PETER PAN– A Musical Adventure, began life as a BBC concert presented in 2001 at the Royal Festival Hall starring John Thaw as a wonderfully menacing Captain Hook. Won Best Song and the Orchestras Award at the 1996 International Musical of the Year in Denmark. They’ve started work on that very rare thing, an original musical called Soho Cinders which is currently at workshop stage; set in modern day London SOHO CINDERS has a very contemporary feel. It’s a 21st century fable, centered on an internet love-story that blends a strong vein of satire with a story of celebrity politics. It has a delicious leading song titled ‘I’m So Over Men’… They have also written two revues and contributed songs to a variety of theatre, TV, and radio shows, including the RSC’s SHAKESPEARE REVUE, THE CHALLENGE, and Dame Edna Everage’s LOOK AT ME WHEN I’M TALKING TO YOU. Anthony wrote the lyrics for THE CARD (Watermill Theatre, Open Air Theatre, Regent’s Park, and UK Tour - nominated for Best Revival in the 1995 Laurence Olivier Awards), and A TWIST OF FATE (Jubilee Hall and Esplanade Theatre, Singapore, voted Best Musical of the Year). As a performer he has been seen in ROGUES TO RICHES, as Porthos in George’s THE THREE MUSKETEERS in Denmark, and as Inspector East in his own A TWIST OF FATE in Singapore. As a director his credits include a revival of the musical SNOOPY at the Watermill, COWARDY CUSTARD at the Royal Academy of Music, HONK! in Cape Town, Chicago, Tokyo and Singapore, and JUST SO at North Shore Music Theatre, Massachusetts and S Festival Theatre.

BB began having piano lessons at the age of six and by the age of eight she was already writing short piano pieces. Later she qualified and worked as a translator in French and German. However, playing and writing music was always her passion so she decided to go back to college and complete a degree in Performance Arts. Along the way she formed a gospel choir, Club Caribe, culminating in the release of their first single, “Christmas, Merry Christmas” by BMG Records. Many songs have been written for and recorded by various classical, jazz and pop artists and the most recent “Mi Amore” by André Rieu Tenor, Béla Mavrák. Her catalogue of songs was becoming quite large, when she joined a group of writers as a founder member of The Mercury Workshop to develop and nurture new musical theatre writing. She was thrilled to meet Stephen Sondheim who became their Patron. BB met writer Peter Spafford through Mercury and thus began a collaboration on “Brontë” with Marc Urquhart directing and orchestrations by Mark Warman which played to critical acclaim at the Redgrave Theatre, Theatre Royal, LIncoln and Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham. The cast included Jan Hartley, Ruth Madoc and Kevin Colson. There followed a further collaboration with writer Nigel Osner on “Goblins Don’t Scare Us” which played to critical acclaim at the New End and Greenwich Theatres, London and Rehoboth Beach, US. Three CD albums of BB’s music followed in quick succession: “Saracubana: The Music of BB Cooper featuring The Stewart Curtis Trio”, “The Music of BB Cooper featuring The Best of British Vocal Jazz” and “Uneasy Street”, the last two albums produced and arranged by Ian Shaw. Artists featured on BB’s albums include Ian Shaw, Jacqui Dankworth, Barb Jungr, Gwyneth Herbert, Trudy Kerr, Christine Tobin, Symeon Cosburn and Polly Gibbons with Ian Shaw on keyboards, Jim Dvorak on trumpet, Thad Kelly on bass, Brian Wright on violin and Mark Fletcher on drums. BB was getting more and more into recording jazz singers. However, in 2004 she was fortunate to be selected and commissioned, among a field of 50 composers by Neal Foster from The Birmingham Stage Company, to write the music for a touring stage adaptation of Kipling’s “The Jungle Book.” BB invited Barb Jungr to write the lyrics. The show recently completed its fourth national tour playing to date in more than 100 theatres and has been a resounding critical and commercial success. In between these tours BB has staged two critically successful shows for contemporary dance at the Karlin Musical Theatre, Prague in collaboration with choreographer/director Pavel Strouhal: “Ghetto 1577? and “La Bohème.” BB started her own label and publishing company, Artfield, in 2002 and is proud to have been accepted, in 2006, as an iTunes Producer which is rare for a small independent label. To date she has more than 30 albums of her own music on iTunes.

With a musical career spanning four decades, Queen founding member Brian May is a world-renowned guitarist and songwriter, with production and performance credits on recordings, which have sold in excess of 100 million copies worldwide. Brian has penned 22 worldwide hits for Queen, among them the anthems “We Will Rock You”, “The Show Must Go On” and “I Want It All”, and powerful ballads, including “Who Wants To Live Forever”, “No-One But You (Only The Good Die Young)” and “Save Me”. As a successful and respected solo artist, Brian’s recordings include albums Back To The Light (1992), featuring “Too Much Love Will Kill You” and “Driven By You”, both Ivor Novello Award winners, and 1998's Another World. His songs continue to influence new generations of performers and have inspired recordings by artists as diverse as Elton John, Def Leppard, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Shirley Bassey and Eminem. Brian has enjoyed collaborations with numerous artists, including Robbie Williams, Foo Fighters, Cliff Richard, Guns N’ Roses, Diana Ross, and Luciano Pavarotti. He was also proud to play feature guitar on the Winter Olympics 2002 opening music, “The Fire Within” for his friend and composer, the late Michael Kamen. Perhaps the most memorable display of Brian’s unique style and musicianship was his performance of his own arrangement of “God Save the Queen”, live from the roof of Buckingham Palace, to open HM the Queen’s 2002 Golden Jubilee celebrations in front of an audience of more than 200 million people around the world. An interest in film scoring developed when Queen became the first rock group to score a major film, Flash Gordon, featuring the hit “Flash!” penned by Brian, followed by definitive music for Highlander. Brian later contributed a mini-opera for Steve Baron's 1996 Pinocchio, and composed a complete film soundtrack for the 1999 French art film, Furia. May is, of course, no stranger to the theatrical world, frequently contributing to the live performance work of his wife, Anita Dobson, but in 1990, entering this world in his own right, he wrote and performed the music for the London Riverside Studios production of Macbeth. He returned at full strength to the Theatre in 2002, as one of the principal creative forces behind the ground-breaking ‘Rock Theatrical’, We Will Rock You, which became phenomenally successful, still one of London’s top-selling shows after six years of nightly standing ovations at the Dominion Theatre, London, and the longest running show ever to play at the theatre. Although We Will Rock You is now a global enterprise, Brian remains personally involved in developing new productions and updating those currently playing. On Freddie’s death, the surviving members of Queen set up a charity to support AIDS relief, the Mercury Phoenix Trust. The MPT has to date channeled more than eight million pounds to over 1,000 AIDS projects around the world. An ongoing commitment to AIDS awareness led Queen to become a driving force in the 46664 campaign for the Nelson Mandela Foundation. The first of a series of 46664 concerts, held in Cape Town in November 2003, was broadcast worldwide via TV, Internet and Radio, becoming the most widely distributed media event in history, with an audience of over 2 billion in 166 countries. Brian continues in his role as an ambassador and participant in the 46664 international concert series aimed at promoting AIDS awareness worldwide. Queen’s musical catalogue consistently tops popularity polls, and their achievements have been recognised with numerous prestigious awards, including being honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (October 2002), being inducted into both the USA Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (March 2001) and the Songwriters Hall of Fame (June 2003), and being among the first inductees into the UK Music Hall of Fame (November 2004), which was an event that was to change the course of Queen - being the first event at which Paul Rodgers joined Brian and Roger (Taylor) as vocalist. Following a successful world tour in 2005/06, Paul, Brian and Roger have recently returned to the studio to create new material for an eagerly anticipated debut Queen/Paul Rodgers studio album. In July 2005, Guinness World Records announced that Queen had overtaken The Beatles to become the most successful albums act in UK chart history. Brian’s further credits are too numerous to list, but they include designing a Planetarium show currently running in Germany and Belgium, appearing in and recording a track for an epic 2003 Pepsi TV advertisement with Brian producing vocal performances from Beyoncé, Britney Spears, and Pink, re-mixing classic Queen recordings in 5.1 Surround Sound, writing themes for several TV shows, producing a number 1 hit, “The Stonk”, for Comic Relief's Red Nose Day, as well as lending his inspirational skills to the three top selling volumes of The Best Air Guitar Album in the World… Ever! Retaining his keen interest in Astronomy, Brian is a regular contributor to The Sky at Night for his long-time friend, Sir Patrick Moore, with whom he co-authored, along with Dr Chris Lintott, an illustrated astrophysics book entitled BANG! The Complete History of the Universe. First published in 2006, it has since been published in 20 languages, and gone to a second updated edition. Brian is currently working on a book on T.R. Williams, seminal stereo photographer of the 1850's, whose work Brian has been researching for 25 years. In December 2005, Brian was honoured with a CBE, Commander of the Order of the British Empire, by HM the Queen, in recognition of his services to the Music Industry. In 2007, after a 30-year break pursuing his musical career, Brian returned to Imperial College, London, to sign up to complete his Doctoral Thesis in Astrophysics, and after one year, successfully submitted the new version of his thesis on Interplanetary Dust. Although already the proud holder of Honorary Degrees from the Universities of Hertfordshire, Exeter and John Moore’s, Liverpool, Brian in 2007 finally achieved the award of a full PhD degree and DIC - Diploma of Imperial College. Brian subsequently accepted a post of Visiting Researcher at Imperial College and will be continuing his work in Astronomy.

His musical training began with classical piano and composition, followed by a career as a professional musician. His love for stage musicals was ignited when he was appointed as pianist with the UK touring orchestra with the Cameron Mackintosh production of the musical Oliver! During the late eighties he performed with Andy Sheppard, with whom he toured extensively, recorded three award-winning CD albums and co-wrote the music score for a short film called Style Monsters, this was broadcast on Channel 4. They also collaborated on the British top 40 entry Bright Moments and secured a music publishing contract with Blue Mountain Music. Some time later he was given the opportunity to perform the improvised piano solo on the top 20 hit Can You Handle It? recorded by DNA featuring Sharon Redd. Another collaborative commission was to co-compose the music for several films (dialogue removed) for the Bristol Short Film Festival ‘Brief Encounters 1998’ and perform it ‘live’ in the Watershed Cinema, simultaneously with the films – a few scary moments as it was partly improvised. More recently, he has written a stage musical called ‘What Colour Is Christmas?’ This is placed in the NODA Stage Musicals catalogue. His latest collaboration with his daughter Paula Buxton, who has achieved a BA (HONS) and an MA in English Literature, is a stage musical called ‘Pooter The Musical’. It is based on the book ‘The Diary of a Nobody’ (1888). It is scored for 8-piece orchestra; backing tracks on CD are also available. The Bristol Old Vic are considering it for production at their next programming meeting. Born in Croydon in 1967, McAlmont moved to Guyana with his mother and sister at the age of 13, and after becoming a born-again Christian, began singing at his Pentecostal church. After completing his A-levels in history and literature, in 1987 he returned to Croydon, where he met Saul Freeman through an advertisement in Melody Maker. The pair formed Thieves, but split before they released their debut album, and after supporting Morrissey on tour, McAlmont released the album under his own name. In 1994 he teamed up with ex-Suede guitarist Bernard Butler to form McAlmont & Butler. Despite a critically acclaimed debut album, The Sound of...McAlmont & Butler, and a Top Ten single, the anthemic "Yes," it was a short-lived project. The pair only performed in public twice and by the time of their second single, "You Do," they were in the middle of an acrimonious split that was played out in the music press. In 1997 McAlmont collaborated with David Arnold on his Shaken & Stirred album, a collection of reworkings of James Bond themes. Their cover of Shirley Bassey's "Diamonds Are Forever" reached the Top 40 but attracted attention more for McAlmont's extravagant white catsuit and diamond earrings combo in the video. The pair teamed up again to pen "Surrender," a k.d. lang track that was in contention to be the Tomorrow Never Dies theme before losing out to Sheryl Crow. A year later, McAlmont released his second solo album, A Little Communication, with contributions from the diverse likes of Jeff Goldblum, Max Beesley, and Craig Armstrong, who then returned the favor by asking McAlmont to provide the vocals for "Snow," a track on his 2002 As If to Nothing album. The same year, in a surprise move, McAlmont & Butler regrouped to record their second album, Bring It Back. Unlike the last time around, the duo promoted the record, performing regularly and doing interviews together, which led to a Top 20 placing and a hit lead single, "Falling." In 2003, McAlmont discovered an enthusiasm for jazz, and performed at a John Coltrane tribute concert at the Barbarican, DJed at the London Jazz Festival, and worked on Courtney Pine's Devotion album. The release of McAlmont's third solo album, Be, was shelved by Hut Records, but in 2004 he released Set One: You Go to My Head, a collection of Cassandra Wilson and Betty Carter-inspired standards. Since then, he has provided backing vocals for several of Bernard Butler's projects, including Duffy and Sharleen Spiteri.

Independently, George Stiles has collaborated three times with Sam Mendes as a composer at the Donmar Warehouse, and is the composer of:- MOLL FLANDERS (winner of Best Musical in the 1995 TMA Awards). TOM JONES (Theatre Royal, York, North Shore Music Theatre, NYMF New York) and, most recently. THE THREE MUSKETEERS (Stadttheater, St. Gallen, Switzerland, and the American Musical Theatre of San Jose in USA). Other recent projects include the score for Sam Mendes’s productions of HABEAS CORPUS, TWELFTH NIGHT and UNCLE VANYA at the Donmar Warehouse and working as Dame Edna’s musical director and arranger.

I write mostly comic songs and script with a basis in dark truth - Bitter and twisted with a sunny smile probably sums it up! Whilst my aim is always to be original I also firmly believe in writing material which is commercially viable, i.e. strong hooks, topical themes with much of my subject matter being heavily influenced by popular modern culture. I would like people to know my music and plays for being accessible, though-provoking and honest... but most of all fun! Telling stories through music is my passion.I studied Music as an undergraduate at Cambridge University, followed by a Masters degree in Composition for Screen at the Royal College of Music, and have been composing for theatre, dance, radio and screen ever since. I have written many new musicals, several with family theatre company Full House Theatre Company including Snow Dog, Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, Pinocchio, Beauty and the Beast, and The Little Match Girl. My own, non commissioned works include Sex and the Village, written with Susannah Pearse and currently being developed by Perfect Pitch Musicals in order to be ready for licensing for production in the Spring of 2012. I composed Something Strange for Grimeborn at the Arcola Theatre in 2009 with Michael Caines, and The Walpole Orange which was produced in workshop at the Robert Atkins Studio at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre. I have created music with casts of young people all over the country, including with Youth Music Theatre, and with Scottish, Hampshire and Hertfordshire Youth Theatres, and have run workshops on song writing, musical theatre, and singing with many different groups and ages, including a large community project at Watford Palace Theatre - Milestones. I have recently started working with the International Schools Theatre Association, who run festivals all over the world. I have also held the position of Composer in Residence at both Wellington College in Berkshire, and at Hills Road SIxth Form College in Cambridge. As well as composing musicals, I also do a lot of commissioned work composing underscoring for plays and regularly compose scores for White Horse Theatre Company in Germany, and for Forest Forge Theatre Company. Media composition has included scores for short films, and more recently I have been working with Made in Manchester - creating scores for radio dramas, including on Radio 5 live - and with Gamelab UK. The first piece I wrote for Gamelab was for a BBC Learning Zones project called Wanna be a Rockstar, recently nominated for a BAFTA. Current work for Gamelab involves creating a TV musical with, and for, young people with learning disabilities. Over the many varied projects I work on, I always come with the idea of music telling a story, and am fascinated by the hundreds of ways this can happen; by using nothing but the voice and textures made by the body, or creating rhythms with percussion, or playing instruments, or using technology. I love musical theatre and the fusion of all of the art forms into one creation… and the collaboration that is needed to create that. That collaboration and integrating music with other art forms, for me, is what it’s all about! In another life, I also lecture (using my married name of Rebecca Warner!) on a variety of music theatre related courses on degrees at both Urdang Academy and at Anglia Ruskin University, where I am also a final year PhD candidate. My research focuses on looking at interpretations of meaning in the collaborative art form of musical theatre. Lecture topics include the History of Musical Theatre, Music Theatre Studies, and the supervision of third year dissertations on musical theatre, in addition to leading practical courses in Making Performance with the Performing Arts students at Anglia Ruskin.

Sandy Wilson

Sandy Wilson was born in Sale, Cheshire on 19 May 1924, and was educated at Elstree Preparatory School, Harrow and at Oriel College, Oxford. His name first came to notice as the writer of revue material. In 1948 he contributed to Slings and Arrows, and the following year wrote for Oranges and Lemons. He was sole author for See You Later (1951) and its sequel See You Again (1952). He made his debut in musical plays as the lyricist of Caprice (1950), with a book by Michael Pertwee and music by Geoffrey Wright. Caprice didn't get to London. When the Players Theatre commissioned Wilson to write a divertissement, he came up with a pastiche of 1920s musical comedy, The Boy Friend. After some lengthening of the original show, and various efforts to get the show to the West End, the production opened to great acclaim at Wyndhams Theatre in January 1954, and ran for 2084 performances. The piece went on to world-wide success, various London revivals and a film version (loathed by Wilson) directed by Ken Russell. The Buccaneer, an even smaller musical about a failing boys' comic being taken over by modern influences, was seen at the New Watergate in September 1953, but had to wait until 1955 before it reached the Lyric Theatre Hammersmith and, briefly, the Apollo Theatre. Wilson's interest in the byways of English literature was perhaps first noted when Valmouth, adapted from the novel by Ronald Firbank, was seen in 1958. One of the most interesting, idiosyncratic and delicate British musicals of the twentieth century, Valmouth revealed Wilson as a superb craftsman, with an exceptionally refined quality. Although Valmouth did not achieve a long run, its reputation is legendary. Unfortunately, the Chichester Festival Theatre revival seen in 1982 was not altogether successful in conveying the strange atmosphere of the work. Valmouth represented a high point of achievement that Wilson found difficult to follow. He contributed material to the Peter Cook revue Pieces of Eight in 1959, and in 1960 wrote some songs for a play by Robert Tanitch, Call It Love, at Wyndhams Theatre (the show was a disaster). In 1964 his sequel to The Boy Friend, Divorce Me, Darling!, in which the characters of the 1920s original were revisited ten years later, had a disappointing run. Its failure effectively marked the end of Wilson's London career. Everything that followed was unassuming but adventurous. Caviar to the general were two musicals adapted from off-beat novels: His Monkey Wife (1971) taken from John Collier's tale of the affection between a man and a female chimpanzee, and The Clapham Wonder (1978), taken from the eccentric novella The Vet's Daughter by Barbara Comyns. The shows were briefly seen, respectively, at Hampstead Theatre Club and at Canterbury. An 'original' pantomime, Aladdin, showed the composer well below par at the Lyric, Hammersmith in 1979. In between came As Dorothy Parker Once Said and his one-man entertainment Sandy Wilson Thanks The Ladies. Along the way Wilson had to abandon several works that remain unproduced, including Goodbye To Berlin (an adaptation of Christopher Isherwood's novel), and musicals about Henry VIII and Amy Johnson. Another collaboration with Geoffrey Wright, Lydia Languish (from Sheridan's The Rivals) has not been seen. In January 1956 Wilson was confidently announcing the production of his musical My Royal Past, the big waltz number of which 'is to be sung by Jeanette Macdonald' but My Royal Past - like so much else from Wilson's hand - did not materialise. There were forays into television (he was an ideal choice to write incidental music to some adaptations of P. G. Wodehouse). As an author, he has published the libretto of The Boy Friend with his own line drawings, two amusing 'animal' biographies (This Is Sylvia and The Poodle From Rome) and an excellent study of Ivor Novello. There was also a fascinating autobiography, I Could Be Happy.

Born in London they grew up in Zimbabwe and spent their teenage years touring with their rock'n roll band. On returning to England they continued their music career recording with various major record labels before joining an international music publisher as contract songwriters. During this period they wrote their first musical, BIG SIN CITY, which after a highly successful national tour of Britain, went on to play a season at London's Roundhouse, as did their second musical, THE COMEBACK, which they co-produced. They then wrote and produced A SLICE OF SATURDAY NIGHT, their award winning 60's pastiche musical. After an extended run at the Kings Head and breaking all records at the Arts Theatre in London's West End when it transferred, A SLICE OF SATURDAY NIGHT, went on to complete four major national tours of Britain, two European tours and two tours of Japan - returning to the west end for a second run at the Strand Theatre. The show has now enjoyed well over 300 productions world-wide and has been translated into nine languages. Recently the show played a limited season Off-Broadway under the American title "Café A Go-Go". Productions of Café A Go-Go are set to open in Detroit and Toronto. When their next musical, LUST opened at The Theatre Royal Haymarket, it meant the Brothers had two shows running simultaneously in London's West End. LUST has subsequently been translated into Swedish and played a very successful season in Norrkoping, Sweden's National Theatre. LUST received it's American premiere at the prestigious Walnut Street Theatre, Philadelphia, before transferring to the John Houseman Theatre in New York. vTheir thriller, BLOOD MONEY, which premiered at the Derby Playhouse also received its American premiere at The Walnut Street Theatre. Tim Minchin is an Australian musician, composer, songwriter, actor, comedian and writer. He has been performing his unique brand of musical comedy in front of appropriately excitable and ever-growing audiences since starting out in South Melbourne’s Butterfly Club in 2005. He won the Directors’ Award at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival for his break-out show Darkside, and followed this later the same year with one of the most successful debut acts ever at the Edinburgh Fringe – winning the Perrier Award for Best Newcomer. Many more awards followed over the years, and without wanting to go on and on about it, he’s done some pretty successful live shows since then too, often in Australia or the UK, but also on the North American continent (yes that includes you too Canada). But not you Guatemala. Maybe one day. His current songs span various musical styles and topics such as environmentalism, rationalism, prejudice(ism), logical fallacies(ism) and his amour de fromage et de boobs(ism). In fact, it would hardly be over the top to say that his love of boobs would be up there in the back of Plato’s cave in the bit that’s carved out for the most perfect and complete example of the love of boobs. But not in a weird way. He plays the piano, always nicely and oftentimes uproariously and excitingly, whilst looking wonderfully athletic in a pair of delightfully uncomfortable skinny jeans. As well as his grand piano and apparel befitting a style guru, Tim is joined onstage by his iconic dance moves, wildly teased hair, gently calmed eyebrows, natural aplomb and his enormous… sense of occasion. During 2009 and 2010, Tim wrote the music and lyrics for Matilda The Musical with the Royal Shakespeare Company. This adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic ran, from November 2010 until January 2011, in Stratford-upon-Avon and then transferred triumphantly to London’s West End, at the Cambridge Theatre in October 2011, winning great critical acclaim and a stack of awards. Tim embarked on his first Arena tour of the UK, joined by the 55-piece Heritage Orchestra and a band, in December 2010. He took the show to Australia in early 2011, performing with the state symphony orchestras all over the country, including four sold out dates with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House. The fourth of these shows was recorded and broadcast live on Australian TV by ABC2. He returned to the UK for some more arena dates with the Heritage Orchestra in April and May 2011, including two dates at The Royal Albert Hall. Tim Minchin And The Heritage Orchestra Live At The Royal Albert Hall was filmed for DVD. Tim had dates in various cities across the US in 2011 and he toured Australia in early 2012 with Tim Minchin vs The Orchestras – Round II. He performed at several festivals in the UK and the US in 2011 and will do so again in 2012. Tim has made many TV appearances, the most recent of which include his first US TV appearances on Conan (11/10c on tbs) and The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson (CBS) in January 2011. In Australia, 2011, he was interviewed and performed a cover of the Crowded House classic ‘Better Be Home Soon’ on Adam Hills In Gordon St Tonight (ABC1), and he performed a new song ‘Lullaby’ with part of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra on Ben Elton’s Live from Planet Earth (Channel 9). In the UK, in 2010, Tim joined Robert Llewelyn for Carpool, hosted an episode of Never Mind The Buzzcocks (BBC) and appeared on Genius (BBC) and 8 Out of 10 Cats (Channel 4). He’s also performed on radio; his most recent project being Strings, a brand new comedy sitcom pilot for BBC Radio 2, which he both wrote and starred in. He also joined the regulars for an episode of The Infinite Monkey Cage on BBC Radio 4 in 2010. His acclaimed 9-minute beat poem, Storm, has been animated and previewed at TAM London in October 2010. It was made available to all on YouTube in 2011, following some film festival fun. He narrated Shaun Tan’s Oscar winning film The Lost Thing, an animated 15 minute short, based on the children’s book of the same name.

I'm most interested in creating musicals with a strong digital element, whether that's an electronic score, a set made of projected animations, or that finds its audience through internet distribution, rather than the conventional theatrical model. Also, I am most interested in doing work underlain by ideas than pure emotion.

I am an actor and singer who has pursued a passion for writing musicals for five years. My first venture was a re-invention of the great tradition of Variety/Vaudeville with an astonishing ensemble of acrobats, jugglers, dancers, actors and storytellers. This spectacular show was called "A Date With Destiny" and was produced at The Oval House Theatre in London.. Since then I have written four more conventional musicals and am about to throw my hat into the ring. I have always written songs and by combining this with my lifelong love of the theatre I am in a position to create both words and music. It would be wonderful to work with producers, directors, designers, MDs and actors to realise my vision of muscular modern musicals which can delight but which have teeth. Willy Russell is well known as the writer of plays and films such as Educating Rita, Shirley Valentine, Our Day Out, and the musical Blood Brothers. His work has attracted huge and appreciative audiences all over the world and his plays and musicals have won countless awards. His first novel, The Wrong Boy, published in 2000, has been translated into fifteen languages. What is perhaps less well known is that Willy has been writing songs since the early 1960s. He wrote not only the book and the lyrics but also the score for his musical Blood Brothers (in continuous production for the past twenty odd years). Add to this the fact that he has provided the scores for the feature films, Shirley Valentine, Dancin' Thru The Dark and Mr Love as well as for the TV series Connie and the television play Terraces and you might start to wonder how he's managed to keep this side of his work such a closely guarded secret. Willy's first CD release - HOOVERING THE MOON - has received favourable reviews and been picked up and played by radio stations across the country.
