After a few decades in BBC Radio, where I directed plays, documentaries (including a week with the Foreign Legion), music and poetry programmes, I was flung into the brutal world of the freelance. Fortunately I had already written and directed two musicals, one for Radio 4, the other for Radio 3 and had other skills that enabled me to earn a shaky living. For reasons that escape me now I was drawn to the theatre and approached a composer/actor, John Telfer, with the information that he and I were going to write a musical. The first one is safely in a desk drawer, but the second, 'Muscles the Musical' had a successful tryout at The Landor theatre in London. We ended up with good reviews, full houses and standing ovations. All of which, in the way of these things, has come so far to nothing. Just as well really as the half-dozen re-writes, reduced cast size and additional songs have made it a far better show. So we will continue knocking on doors until someone with money says yes. In the meantime, the next show is dancing in my mind.....

Barnaby Race is a singer-songwriter and lyricist from London. He is currently studying at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama and has been fortunate enough to work as a singer and programmer on some great projects. These include sessions for BBC Radio 1Xtra, Classical FM and BBC Radio 3, as well as singing backing vocals for artists such as Dizzy Rascal, Bruce Dickinson and Jethro Tull. In the studio he’s worked with producers such as Cam Blackwood (Jamiroquai, We are Scientists), Danny Schogger (Wham, Celine Dion) and Benny D (Plan B, Paloma Faith). His music is a fusion of pop meets music theatre and draws on artistic influences such as Rufus Wainwright, Randy Newman and Danny Elfman to name but a few. Recent compositions include a collaboration with members of the BBC Concert Orchestra on an electronic adaptation of Jonathan Harvey’s ‘Madonna of Winter and Spring’, which was performed at the Barbican in January. He has also written material for a new musical theatre show, ‘A Song Cycle for Soho’, that had a sell out run at The Soho Theatre over February and March. When not writing songs, he can be found performing as the lead singer for The Band Called Up, who are currently playing academy sized venues up and down the UK.

Willy Russell is well known as the writer of plays and films such as Educating Rita, Shirley Valentine, Our Day Out, and the musical Blood Brothers. His work has attracted huge and appreciative audiences all over the world and his plays and musicals have won countless awards. His first novel, The Wrong Boy, published in 2000, has been translated into fifteen languages. What is perhaps less well known is that Willy has been writing songs since the early 1960s. He wrote not only the book and the lyrics but also the score for his musical Blood Brothers (in continuous production for the past twenty odd years). Add to this the fact that he has provided the scores for the feature films, Shirley Valentine, Dancin' Thru The Dark and Mr Love as well as for the TV series Connie and the television play Terraces and you might start to wonder how he's managed to keep this side of his work such a closely guarded secret. Willy's first CD release - HOOVERING THE MOON - has received favourable reviews and been picked up and played by radio stations across the country.
